3rd Grade - What's this? 1
Introduction idea:
http://soundbible.com/tags-spaceship.html
I entered the classroom with a cone-shaped Alien hat I made out of tin foil, and cape. I spoke in a weird nasaly voice and acted like I was visiting earth for the first time and didn't know what anything was. I introduced myself as "X2-8000" or something like that, and then with a powerpoint showing pictures of (who else) the Coneheads, introducing them as my family ("this is my mother, this is my father", etc) then I went around the class asking “what is this?” in an alien voice, and when students answer, repeats it several times, holding the classroom item to my head as if that’s the way aliens memorize things (also like the Coneheads). After 10 or 12 items, I said goodbye, left the classroom, took off the ridiculous costume, and re-entered the classroom as the "English teacher" again.
Game idea: Partner game. Two players use one set of picture cards showing the objects being learned during this lesson. (these may be included in the English book, or you can make your own cards.)
Arrange the cards face up, between each pair of students, the students all ask the teacher “What is this?” at the same time and whatever item the teacher answers, the first student in each pair to grab the card with that item on it gets to keep the card as one point. After the game is finished the player with the most cards wins. Since there are eight cards, if there is a tie, have the students play rock paper scissors to determine the winner.

3rd Grade - What's This? 2
Please game: The teacher says any of the following words, and the students do the actions together - start with a few at first, and add more over time: Big jump, little jump, slow walk, fast walk, kangaroo jump, rabbit jump, turtle walk, bird fly, monkey swing, penguin walk, fish swim, cheetah run, sit down, stand up,
Song: “What’s this?”
go around classroom and sing song with classroom objects.
Example:
"What's this? What's this? Whats this? What What?
It's a pen, it's a pen, pen, pen, pen."
Then pick up other classroomobjects and sing along with students.
Role play: Country mouse and city mouse. Have students use orange and cake cards to do role play with each other as they watch the animation. After lots of repetition, ask for volunteers to do the role play in front of the class.
Game: Speed quiz game. Divide class into teams of however many rows there are in the class (6) and each class takes a turn. One student sits on a chair underneath the screen and looks at his or her teammates. Teammates stand up and in order of front to back, look at the Korean words on the screen (from the lesson vocab, i.e. pen, pencil, bag, desk) and have to act out the word for the student under the screen. IF the student under the screen guesses the word, the student who makes a motion can sit down and it’s the next students turn to do motions for a different work (teacher tends the computer to click right or wrong answer). The team with the most points wins

3rd Grade - What's This? 3
Flannel board: Zoo/Farm animals. Make sure kids learn “camel” and also have them practice saying “dog” and “duck”.
Show “Timing Game” Powerpoint. Pictures moves quickly across the screen and students must pay attention, raise their hands, and say what it is.
TPR (Total Physical Response):“Stand up, turtle walk, kangaroo jump, bird fly, pig nose, fish swim, monkey swing.”
Let’s chant: Make laminated finger DDR cards with pictures of all the things in the chant so that the students can point to the picture on the card at the same time as they’re chanting. The teacher can go around and bop students on head with squeaky hammer if they get it wrong (at least 3rd grade really liked that)
Let’s play: 2 teams. Blindfold, squeaky hammer, 6-8 pictures of animals. Start with team 1 and go back and forth. During each turn one volunteer from a team comes to the front and puts on a blindfold. The students all say “turn around” and the student has to turn around with the blindfold on. Repeat one or two more times. Then the student must hit a picture with the hammer, and then the whole class must ask “What’s this?” The student can’t see, so he or she must guess which animal it is. If they’re right, their team gets a pog, no point.
Let's play: Another fun game idea using the squeaky hammer: This game is especially good for a lesson which teaches a lot of vocabulary. Divide the class into two teams and have one player from each team come to the front. One player says one word, and the other student must answer with a different word within five seconds. They go back and forth until one student cannot think of another word, or repeats a word which has already been said. The winner gets to hit the loser on the head with the squeaky hammer. As much as possible, the teacher should try to make sure that students of similar English levels face up against each other.

3rd Grade - This is For You
Practice: Native Teacher makes action like an animal. Korean teacher points to Native teacher and asks the students: “What’s this?” End by holding a wrapped present and asking: “What’s this?” (Answer: It’s a birthday present.)
Practice: Go around class giving the present to different students and saying
Teacher: Happy Birthday, this is for you!
Student: Thank you!
Teacher: You’re welcome!
(If students want to give the present to other students, let them do that for a while, to practice.
Game: Give students a piece of paper. Let them draw a picture of four presents. (school supplies or animals, show powerpoint of pictures to give them ideas)
Then have the students stand up and play the game
Game dialogue:
S1: Hello I’m ________. Nice to meet you.
S2: Hello, I’m ________. Nice to meet you
(rock paper scissors)
S1(loser): Happy birthday, this is for you
S2(winner): What’s this?
S1: It’s a cake
S2: Thank you!
S1: You’re welcome
The students can play with anyone they want as many times as they want until the alotted time is over. Then everyone will count their cards (preferrably in English) and the student with the most cards wins.
Since the dialogue is so long, practice the game with several students in front of the whole class and then also do whole-class role play before starting the game so it's really engrained.

Have all the students turn and face the back of the class except the students in the front row. Whisper one of the words corresponding to one of the cards on the blackboard to each student in front. Do not let them start the game early, make sure they wait. When each student is definitely sure of what their word is, say “Ready, go” and then the student in front can tap on their teammates shoulder and act out the word for them. Once the teammate knows the word, they can tap on the next player’s shoulder, they turn around, and repeat the same thing until the student in the very back knows the word. At that point, the student in back runs to the front of the class, grabs the hammer, and hits the matching card. If the student doesn’t know the answer, or hits the wrong card, the teacher takes the hammer from them and gives it to another student. The player who hits the right card with the hammer wins one point for their team.
