5th Grade - What Day is Today? 2
Greeting: How are you? “I’m hungry for…” What day is today, introduce finger signs to help them remember later for the game. Have students follow, hold up thumb and say Sunday, hold up thumb and finger and say “Monday” etc.
TPR: Play invisible soccer ball game, calling out someone’s name first, then throwing the item and saying “here is a ______”
Review ordinal numbers 11-20 (Powerpoint) paying particular attention to the pronunciation of 12th and 20th (on powerpoint). Then review by reciting them in a volley, teacher says first, students say second, teacher says third, students say fourth, etcetera, then switch and start over. Ask if anyone has a birthday which lands on a day between the 11th and 20th of a month and ask them to say the day (month not necessary).
Sing: “Days of the Week” song one time from the CDROM.
Phonics. Review previously learned vowel sounds “A”“I”. Introduce “O” sound. Talk about mouth shape. Mouth shape large for ‘O’, medium for ‘A’, and small (flat) for ‘I’ sound.
Play game. Divide class into three teams. Open internet browser window and find online stopwatch website. Show on screen if possible. Player on the front right is the first player. Show students how to play. When the clock starts, player one turns to the student behind him and holds up a certain number of fingers (1-7) and asks “What day is today?” The student behind him then answers according to how many fingers the student is holding up. Show them how to continue asking each other the “what day is today” question and answering until each student has answered (adjust number of times students ask if the number of students is uneven)
Before starting let the students know that they are not allowed to repeat the same day over again. Each day must be different from the previous one.
Write each team’s time on the whiteboard. Time permitting play twice so that each team has a chance to practice.

5th Grade - It's Under the Table 1
Warm up: Invisible present game (See Games/Activities)
Review days and numbers with students. Show students hand number signs from the game and ask “What day is today?” Students respond.
Review Ordinal numbers. Say numbers back and forth, like this: Teacher: “first” Students: “Second” etc.
Show “where are my things” video
Play game
Put two desks at the front of the classroom so everyone can see them. Then put a pen on the chair. Ask, “Where is the pen?” and call on a student who raises their hand to respond. “It’s on the chair”.
After enough practice has been done, divide the class into two teams and any student who raises their hand can represent their team for a turn. Teacher puts the pen somewhere in relation to the box or chair, and asks student “Where is the pen?” Teacher then counts to ten with their fingers. If the student can’t answer within ten seconds or gets the answer wrong, then their team doesn’t get a point. If the answer correctly within ten seconds, they get a point for their team.

5th Grade - It's Under the Table 2
Greeting: How are you? Review positions with hand motion. Make hand motion and students must say position (on, under, next to, etcetera)
Sing: http://www.youtube.com/icnelly#p/u/20/KO6iuzKii0g
(my 5th graders really seem to like this song!)
First sing with no music, practicing while looking at the lyrics. To do this you can either click through the sections of the video to find the lyrics, or make a separate powerpoint slide with the lyrics typed on it (neater looking).
After practicing a few times slowly without music, play video and sing together with students. (Of course, if it's possible to play guitar, piano or some other instrument as accompaniment instead, students love it.)
Ask students to try to explain the meaning of “Thank you for helping me” (from the song). Ask them to explain it simply in English if they can.
Review Lesson with “Where are the cats?” Powerpoint.
Phonics: Review the short vowel pronunciations: A, E, I, O, U, then give a four word spelling test:

5th Grade - Directions 1
Greeting: What day is today? What
Month? (say months up to the current month starting with January) What date? (Count up to the date
from '1st')
Review: play guitar and sing “Oh what a nice day” song (from icnelly youtube site) one time slow and one time fast.
Introduce: After learning “go left, go right, go straight” then give students a short quiz by making different hand motions which represent each direction and having them shout out the answer as fast as they can think of it. While making direction motions, turn back to students so they don’t get confused by the perspective. Show map powerpoint, and ask student to give directions to different locations. Point to the picture and ask “Where is the church” and then point to the arrows and have the students give the directions. For example if there are “straight” and “left” arrows then the students should say “Go straight and turn left”. Also it might be fun to have students raise their hands and give teacher directions for walking around the class. Especially funny if students give the wrong directions and the teacher walks into the wall or something.
Game: “Find Cinderella game.” One student is “Prince” and goes outside the class. The other student is “Cinderella” and stays in her (or his) seat. Tell students that they cannot point to Cinderella or say who she is, they can only give directions to the prince. When the prince comes into the classroom, he or she says “Where is Cinderella?” and then students raise their hands for a chance to tell the prince where to go. When the prince finally gets close to Cinderella, all the students say “STOP!” and the prince asks all the students around him or her “Are you Cinderella?” Students who are not Cinderella must respond “No”, or “No I’m not” but when the Prince asks Cinderella, she says “Yes” and that round is finished. Practice first time with one of the teachers acting as the prince so students can get used to it.

Game: Speed line quiz. Divide class into two teams. Have picture cards at the front. Two students at a time come to the front. The teacher quickly flips a card out and the first student to make the proper exclamation (e.g. What a nice day! What a tall man!”) gets a point for their team. Keep this game going fast with lots of points.
Game: Snatch game with cards. Partner game. Prepare six sets of eight cards with pictures which illustrate the different expressions being learned for the class. Each pair of students gets one eight-card set, which they should spread face up between them on their desk. Before starting game, show students all the cards and have them repeat the correct phrase for each one. They must all put their hands behind their heads, then the teacher says a phrase from one of the cards. The quickest student to slap their hand down on the card must hold the card in the air and say the phrase. Each card is one point. Repeat until finished. When there is only one card left they will try to get it right away before you say anything, but to avoid this, let them know that when there is only one card left, you will purposely say the wrong answers a few times, so that they have to listen carefully until you really call out the last card.
